Annotated Bibliography
~Schleifstein, Mark. November 27, 2018. "Climate report: Louisiana, Southeast at exceptional risk through end of century" Nola.com
Schleifstein, reviews the risks of climate change in New Orleans and the overall risk that climate change have on Louisiana as a whole. Louisiana has been effected by sea levels rising, greater amount of rain fall days, warmer temperatures, and an increase in mosquitos. The impacts are especially high to New Orleans infrastructure and human health. By New Orleans already being below sea level we can't risk the sea levels to increase even more. The author uses graphs and visuals to show the specifics of the direct impact. It also displays how the economy correlates with temperature changes and how transportation ways, communities and population sizes all align with climate change. The purpose of this article is to inform people how climate change is real and how it is effecting us directly being that we live in New Orleans. The author used graphs and charts to give specific numbers to back up his facts. This article is written in a simple form and it contains visuals so that the audience can be able to understand it. With this being said I believe that the targeted audience is the people who live in Louisiana because once the risk get too high we will be the one suffering so it's important to know how climate change is impacting us. What I liked about this article was that it is very straight to the point and specific. This article is reliable because it is a news site but it may not be an educational site due to the fact it ends with .com and not .edu or .org. I would improve this site by adding people's personal views on the problem since they are the one's its actually affecting. I would use this article in my project.
~Reckdahl, Katy. October 6, 2018. "Climate change is for real, and these New Orleans residents are trying to combat it" theadvocate.com
Reckdahl, catches the stories of individuals who live in New Orleans and are aware of the effects of climate change. It explains their different methods on how they combat climate change. One of the residents Jeanne John used trees as a rain garden alternative. She attended a community forum where there was dozens of New Orleanians that practices ways to combat climate change and make their area less susceptible to flooding. They used the method of sticky notes to make different suggestions and changes within their community but the main concept of the meeting was to acknowledge the fact that climate change is real. The purpose of this source is to realize that climate change is something that we have to acknowledge and work hard to reverse the drastic components of it. The method the author used was using personal experiences in order to show the importance of climate change. The intended audience in my opinion would be climate deniers, I say this because it's written in a way that the reader is supposed to relate to the residents and learn with them. I liked how it was written so simple and descriptive. The source may not be educational but it is a news site. I would improve the source by adding solid evidence to back up the statements made. I wouldn't use this source just because it doesn't really have any visuals.
~Schorn, Daniel. November 18, 2005. "New Orleans is sinking" cbsnews.com
Schorn, expresses the fact for over 300 years that the sea levels rising is closing in on New Orleans. In about 90 years our city will be basically off the map. They are contemplating on if New Orleans is even worth saving because the sea levels are rising at such a fast rate. It talks about how so many homes were destroyed in Katrina and how its not just homes that were destroyed but also peoples families and lively hood. The source speaks on the fact that even once we evacuate from New Orleans there is really no place for us to go, so imagine if New Orleans was wiped off the map then what. The purpose of this source is to show how detrimental hurricanes can be and how the sinking of New Orleans is far from a good sign. The method the author used was persuasion mixed with data to make the predictions even more detrimental and real. The intended audience is the city planners that should have plans for all the lost that happens during hurricanes. I liked the overall flow of the article and how it was a mixture of story telling and factual evidence. This is a news source so I would say it's pretty reliable. I would use this source for the residence stories.
~Williams, Jessica. November 19, 2018. "More on New Orleans latest water issues: cold weather, power, workforce all issues" the advocate.com
Williams, explains how even the new installment of the $80 million water tower couldn't even fix our water problems. The water pressure levels are still dropping low even though the towers put in place to prevent the pressure levels from dropping. Apparently the water pressure levels are still coming up short which resulted in a water boil advisory which lasted for 27 hours. The towers were working but there was an operating error that had occurred and by them not being able to fix the error in time enough they had to send out the boil advisory. The articles zooms in on the fact that the water pressure levels drop more than they are supposed to and how its becoming a normality to New Orleanians. The purpose of this source is to inform people on how our water problem in New Orleans is not good. The method the author used was very narrative based and it was clear and concise. The audience should be the water board so that they know how we feel and they can fix their mistakes. This source is reliable because it is a news website and I would use this article for my project.
~Dunn, Katherine. May 29, 2018. "The story behind the oldest pumps in the New Orleans drainage system" the advocate.com
Dunn, expresses how the draining system in New Orleans has been horrible and insufficient. It has allowed disastrous flooding and an out break of diseases due to the insufficient drainage system. When a drainage system was made in 1899 Sewerage and Water Board was established and the drainage system was as great as it get then as years passed on the system became in ineffective. The pump relied on a vacuum that sucked up debris and trash which could clog the drains. These pumps has been used for centuries which is a problem because they are as effective as when they were first installed. The purpose of this text is to explain the problems with the drainage system in New Orleans. The audience intended is the citizens if New Orleans so that we can speak out against the situation. This source is reliable because it is a news source and I would use it in my project. I like this article because it gives history on the pumps and how and who they were made by.
