For this week we had to read a chapter of one of my favorite book “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler. This book is a futuristic dystopian book that is set in a time where crime is abnormally high. The book follows Lauren Olamina a girl growing up in a gated community. She has hyperempathy syndrome which allows her to feel the feeling of other, such as pain or pleasure, which can at times make her very vulnerable. She begins to form her own religion and takes comfort in it. Thieves break into the gated community and all turn chaotic. This dystopian society reminds me of how this our world can turn. We can still fix this however, if we don’t change the way we treat the earth then this dystopian society will become a reality.
This book was extremely good to me. Moreover even though it was sci-fi it felt very real to me. It’s as if this can really happen. It also make me feel a sense of joy in my heart. Octavia Butler is a African American woman who excelled at writing pieces of sci-fi. This isn’t very easy to do. Most of the sci-fi community is dominated by white males. However disputed opposition she is excelling in her line of work.
