Climate Refugees (4/2)

The Refugees The World Barely Pays Attention To by Tom Mc Donnell is about life after a disaster and moving on from the aftermath of things. They continued to discuss the effects of climate change on coastal Louisiana and the fast decrease in the land. In The Refugees The World Barely Pays Attention To by Tim Mc Donnell is how about the language around people who move from around areas affected by climate change is more important than actually helping people affected by it. The process of saving peoples lives has been compromised by governments need to classify these people first. Helping in the relocation of people affected by the disaster should be more important than classification but it is not.
I can relate to both in the sense that at one point I was relocated after Katrina and in the sense that the government hadn't helped much during that time. I believe that instead of trying to classify we should figure out who needs the most help and help those people first. Similar to the Women of Katrina article I believe the people most affected are women and children. Those people should be helped first because they are most affected. Living in Louisiana we can clearly see the effects of the city being below sea level yet nothing has happened to fix this.

Final Project

Me and Quasjale are planning on relating our final project to gender. We will incorporate a short podcast. During this project we will try and reach out to programs that help to unbuild women and men. When I say men we are in no way saying men need to be upbuilt. However, we are saying that the recognization of the differences in men and the their levels of masculinity. In this podcast we will basically go over stereotypes and “gender roles” in our today’s society.

CSED

CSED stands for Center for Sustainable Entergagement Department. “ CSED focus is on costal rehabilitation, greenjning the built environment, and increasing food security.” From my knowledge they are located in the lower 9th ward in New Orleans Louisiana. Their main mission is to lift up and reinforce community driven goals. This is really important to have a program like this for help. Poorer communities struggle to actually evaluate their plans because of a lack of resources. However this program seems like it help and work with communities to give them the push that need. I didn’t get the opportunity to attend this field trip, however, I really like the mission statement of this program. Something I would work on if I was apart if this program is publicity. This is a very strong and good willed program however many don’t know it exist. A few ways to increase awareness might be social media, having gatherings at schools, or even just fliers around local libraries.

A laughing matter??

It’s weird to think of climate change as something th to laugh at after seeing the horrible affects it has on our lives and our environment. However, authors of “Confronting Climate Change Through Humor” along with those apart of the “Inside the Greenhouse” project set out to challenge this notion. Maxwell Boykoff and Beth Osnes write, “Among possible pathways humor is underutilized; yet comedy has power to connect people, information, ideas, and new ways of thinking/acting (Scott).” When we think about humor we mostly think about is as something that’s only meant to bring laughter. However this articles push the boundaries of humor; it gives humor a new meaning, connection. Humor is something most human have and can relate to. Therefore mixing humor with critical matters is a great way to inform and get more people interested in wanting to listen and help. The article explains this again saying, “Research has shown that positive emotions can actually serve to inhibit the sense that something is wrong and needs to be address through problem solving behavior (McGraw, Schiro & Fernbach, 2015).” This research essentially proves that people are more likely to listen and take action against a matter if they are introduced it in a more positive way. This doesn’t mean that climate change should be viewed positively and humorously; this article shows us that humor is used just to introduced the subject in a lighter way to get better results.

I really agree with this article. As a person I tend to get distracted and bored with things easily, and many other people are just like me. Therefore a great way to grow the movement is to meet them halfway. The article brought out a good point; it briefly compared using comedyto a vehicle that meets you and take you to the place you need to be. This analogy is amazing it really paints a picture of how useful using comedy for important, crucial matters. Although many people might feel this method may be inappropriate I feel that this method is pure genius.

JSU Trip
At the beginning of the semester fourteen students, myself included, went on a trip to Jackson State University for a program called IMAGE. We learned about the meteorology program and discovered that there aren't many African American citizens in our country in this industry. We took a tour around their campus, visiting the library, saw the pavilion, and got to even eat some Chick-Fil-A. After the tour, they taught us a little about how natural disasters are tracked, what to do when a natural disaster strikes the area you live in, and we released a weather tracking device into the sky. It was an enjoyable trip, and left a great impression of the school on my whole class. One of the students even applied to their college.

GROW DAT

Let me start by saying  Amazing. I felt so much connection  when I went to the youth farm because since I was  Youth  I  always been in more green spaces like farms, and ranches and  having the opportunity to visit a farm and see how helpful this farms can  be not only for the established of our ecosystem but also help the community, and how to Grow Dat   youth farm help youth adults to get more experience and to get  some knowledge of the benefit of the land like agriculture and also it created  opportunities not only for youth adults but for anyone who is interesting in agricultural, and have passion for  the land.

To know their still people who want to make a change  in society  us in the ecosystem by given their all to create these new areas where life is been cultivated and protected and Let me tell you been in the farm everything is completely different, the Air is fresher and less heavy, and just by been there your whole mood change to be more relaxing.
Been at the Center for Sustainable  Engagement and  Development was an amazing experience,  and to know there is such an organization right here in New Orleans the takes time with people citizens of  New Orleans and its community to talk about  situations impacting our communities are schools, are green areas, and  happing the opportunity to share an  issue I´m aware of and worry about and how I exposed to the group and together we all  find  the cause and at what expand or extension of this issue we are not aware of and finding a solution for these issues, I was really  proud of the issue I present and find a lot of useful information  as well I feel so grateful  of having such  nice experiences.

Digital Media Final Project

Me, Lashaee, and Qay’s are going to do our project on climate change awareness. Our plan is to do a public interview around our schools. We will basically go around and ask students how they feel and what they know about climate change. Then at the end of the video we will summarize our conclusions that we have drawn from the responses. We will also give out the information that we have learnt and our personal feelings on climate change.

Film Analysis

The film “Disruption” by Kelley Nyks and Jared P. Scott is a 52 minute film that was realized in 2014. The film sets out to inform people and persuade them that we need to change the way we are running our earth, environmentally, and we need to do it now. The directors of this film provides an abundant amount of evidence for the need to change ranging from scientific evidence to real world proof of devastating events. A huge example of these devestating effects of climate change is the destruction done to the Philippine islands from the super typhoon Haiyan; The film not only shows the destruction but it also gave insight to how and what a local felt and had to deal with. The directors also chose to include politics in this film and how they are denying climate change despite the intense evidence that proves climate change is real. The film also track the biggest climate rally in history giving us an inside scope into some of the work that was being done.

This film opens up with a very eye catching scene of the beautiful earth being filmed from out of space. It then goes to a black screen saying that this isn’t the earth we are in today. The earth we are on today is full of disasters caused by climate change. It’s full of pollution, emissions, and death of humans and ecosystems. The film displays this perfectly by showing a very devastating event that took place, super typhoon Haiyan. Super typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippine islands and destroyed “everything”. The film helps us see this but typhoons are just a normal part of the earth cycle right? Wrong. The intensity of this typhoon can be seen as an direct correlation of climate change. The directors goes on to explain how scientists, for years, have been explaining climate change and how real it is. In 1892 Joseph Fourier discovers the idea of the greenhouse gas effect. From here on the evidence just intensified. However, the film shows how even though the evidence is growing politicians keep ignoring it or making up temporary “solutions”. For example the 2 degree Celsius increase cap. The video makes note that at the rate we are going, using up fossil fuels and releasing CO2, we will far surpass that capping at a 6 degree increase. This might not seem like a huge number but an increase of this amount makes civilization on earth impossible.

This movie did a very good job at giving off a sense of importance. The use of the music combined with the scenes being displayed made everything so suspenseful. However it also informed. Much of the information used might be hard for your common person to understand. This film gave a way for you to understand via analogies. For example, an ability given compared fossil fuels to millions of dollar bills buried; once found you will keep digging and digging to get more. However, you are paying a cost to dig and there is a ticking clock counting down the time to something. The way I took this analogy was that the ticking clock counted down to destruction which is ultimately true. The constant digging for more of these fossil fuels are leading us to destruction. Things like this are put into ways that people can understand the urgent need for action.

This film made me feel sad and motivated. It is very sad to see something like super typhoon Haiyan hit and destroy an actual town. It’s hard to see this and not want to take action. It’s hard to see this and not feel so sad that your emotionally driven to have to break from the movie. However, the saddest part was to know that their are people that deny climate change is having real affects on people’s life; and that’s where my sadness turned into motivation. It turned it to motivation to try and go help, to try and get involved more into the movement, to inform others and ultimately that is the goal. It’s good to see people of different race, religion, and gender get together and march in this historical rally. It’s good to see that no matter what differences they have they are all passionate about this movement. It also helps you see that you don’t have to be afraid of not being heard because your are not alone.

Migration and Climate Change

The sources discuss the use of memes and photography within the debate of climate change. Sources such as “ Meet the ‘climate refugees’ who already have to leave their homes”, discuss how climate change has caused communities to migrate away from their homes due to harsh conditions. The article discusses the article the “natural” disaster that tore apart communities in New Orleans, hurricane Katrina. The stories of people who were affected mentally and physically by the event whether is be from being relocated to a completely different state, Indegionoys people who have had their livelihood threatened, or people who developed PTSD from the experience. According to the article, “The Refugees the World Barely Pays Attention To”, the number of displaced people due to catastrophic weather conditions had an average of  24 million people and it is predicted to continue to rise. Due to the constant occurrence of migration due to climate challenges, people began advocating for new international policies on “climate refugees”, but it was not successful. Increasing anti-immigrant sentiment and nationalism also pose as an obstacle for the creation of a policy protecting immigrants affected by climate change, especially considering that a large portion of migrants are people of color.

The articles were very informative and enlightening. It was interesting to hear the different ways that major natural disasters in Louisiana affected people in similar , but different ways. It also made me think of one of the ignored aspects of experiencing an natural disaster. Many people experience mental trauma after witnessing life changing events such as severe hurricanes and other disasters. I think that people often have their  mental health disregarded  during chaotic times like those and the topic should be given more attention. I was also reminded of the difficulties that my family faced mentally and physically during Hurricane Katrina. It was a difficult time that cause a large displacement of my family members and the conditions became detrimental to the health of many. People who are fleeing their homes due to natural disasters should be extend more protection and empathy from those who have the means to help, they can not control the situation they are in and ensuring their safety should be shown more urgency.

VOCAB:

Panoply - a wide array or collection of something.

Environmental Degradation- the deterioration of the environment through misuse of natural resources.

Monoculture- agriculture practice of growing only one specific crop.

Migration and refugees

Within the pictures it shows all the damage that is being done to our planet due to climate change and the reoccurring natural disasters. On the other hand each of the articles express the mishaps and devastations that natural disasters such as hurricanes have on them, their family, and communities. The stories demonstrate how having to migrate from home town can be challenging and how it can tear apart communities and families. Some have to leave their home place where they have been for all their life and move to a completely new environment just because they fear that if they do return to their hometown the same thing will happen again and they will lose everything again and have to start over for a second time. This doesn’t just affect the people who actually have to migrate but this also affects the residents in which the people migrate to. Because then it begin to limit resources and job opportunities.
These articles were all very unique and they all told their story in their own way. They expressed all the hardships and also shared their personal feelings towards climate change and how it will potentially lead to the end of the world. Also reading this I can relate to their stories because even though I wasn’t in New Orleans At the time of Hurricane Katrina it still affected me and my family tremendously. It caused me and my family to lose contact for months at one point my mom felt as though we would never find them again. Alsoy cousins and aunt moved after Hurricane Katrina and I can honestly say that it has also taken a tole on our family relationship as a whole. In conclusion climate change is one of the top reasons people migrate and the reality is that it can dismantle your familie’ relationship and communities.

Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development (3/26)

Today we visited the Center for Sustainable Engagement and Development and I really had a nice time learning about the controversy with smart meters. Smart meters are the new implementation that Entergy New Orleans is trying to add this to New Orleans Jones to get more accurate readings on energy production and consumption. Many people are curious about this new technology and how it will work and if it will affect their civil liberties. The best part was us discussing different scenarios about environmental issues and figuring out plans to help and prevent further damage. I also had a nice time just enjoying the scenery at the bayou.

Grow Dat Reflection

Visiting Grow Dat was an extremely great experience. It was refreshing to seee all of the greenery in a place where you do not usually see functional gardens. It was great to hear that Grow Dat  uses sustainable gardening methods that do not damage the environment the way that big industry agriculture does. They’d take the community and the environment into consideration. I think that their mission to expose the New Orleans community to fresh food and sustainable growing methods are an example of great steps that should be taken to ensure food justice. Grow Dat is a awesome organization and their message and beliefs should be heard by the whole community.

Grow Dat

Our trip to grow dat was a great experience. I loved how informational our tour guide was she was able to answer all of our questions fully and with quality. This trip brought me back to my days in Ethiopia. The days when I would go outside and play around in nature and take care of the land behind my house. During the tour I was very familiar with most of the crops and herbs that were presented and was also very excited that I was able to remember and express my experience in a positive way. The trip was great and I do look forward to visiting there again some day.

Think 100% ep:29 Notes

In episode 29 Angelo Logan from The Moving Forward Network sits down with Antonique to discuss how they are building power by connecting communities, fighting for solutions led by people at the front-lines, and leading campaigns on both the local and national levels. They also talk with wendy fields from The Democracy Initiative to discuss what Brett Kavanaugh's appointment to the supreme court might mean for voting rights, pro- democracy ballot initiatives in the upcoming election, and the need for us all to focus on civil engagement everyday. Angelo Logan talks with Antonique about cancer alley and what's being done about the problem. They discuss the problem with the city not doing anything about these types of issues and basically leaving these communities to hang. They discuss partnering with different communities s they across state, across the country, and moving forward across the region ;to take action in communities like cancer alley. The Moving Forward Network is a group of 50 organizations, made of community based front-line groups, mainstream environmental organizations, and academic partners. They come together to pull resources to gather information to build a stronger environmental network organically. To prevent new harms and making sure goods are moved properly and facilities are placed properly and while developing green zones. The movement is to make sure communities are in the proper health and it stays that way.

Personally the Network is something new that needed to be established. I think that its wrong for states to like communities hanging like that and there should be plans established to help. The overall meeses of the network is to have states make sure communities are healthy for people to live. It's also refreshing to see a movement during so many different communities together for the benefit of everyone.

Field trip reflection

The trip to Grow Dat was interesting. I enjoyed seeing how a sustainable farm looks like. I found learning about the plant life seasons interesting. I also learned about the things that go into growing plants and how much climate change can throw something like that program back. I also found it interesting of how much goes into the process altogether. Although i would of liked to learn more about the youth program.

Why is Climate Change a Joke? (3/26)

In Russian trolls shared some truly terrible climate change memes by Kate Yoder they discuss how Russia has intervene in United States during the election and has now gotten themselves into the climate change argument. In Do millennials see climate change as more than just a meme?” (Kuppa 2018) the relationship between climate change and young adults are discussed. I believe that the text about millennials affected me more. The thing that interested me the most about the millennial text was that millennials were less likely to discuss climate change with their families. This was really relatable because we try not to talk about things that harm us often but someone needs to start the discussion.
I feel that the people who should be most concerned about climate change should be the people who should be most affected in the future. I feel that as a teen climate change is no joke and it should not be made fun of because when it needs ro be taken seriously no one will take it serious and then it will be to late.  I also believe that we should not allow other countries to affect what we are trying to change in climate change. I think that we need to set up a plan so that other countries can not interfere with how we run our country especially with everything going on with the election. I believe Russia is another big country that actually should believe in climate change seeing as this could affect their vegetation and livelihood.

Ron Triggs
3/19/19
Film Analysis
The documentary Disruption is a film aims to address the fact that we so little to stop climate change on a governmental level event though we know climate change is a major concern. The documentary also allow us to see some of the things that national organizations are doing to fight for climate change laws and to fight for the current climate change laws to be enforced. The movie Disruption was directed by Jared P. Scott and produced by Kelly Nyks. Disruption was released in 2014 and is a 52 minute long documentary.
Disruption discusses the ways that struggle leads to process and the current struggle we are faced with. The film displays some of the many ways that the United States government acknowledges climate change and climate change effects but refuses to do enough to stop climate change. The director uses a series of long-shots, mid-shots, and three-quarter-shots. Long-shots are used to  show what issues people are attempting to change. Mid-shots are used to show the people who are creating the policies. Three-quarter shots were used to establish the people who are fighting against the industries and policies that continue to allow companies to heavily impact climate change.
The director used many different techniques to convey their message. Interviews were used as a method to tell the story throughout the entire documentary. The directors accurately used B-roll, which furthered the message they were attempting to convey. Darker music was used for more serious topics such as talking about the amount of carbon dioxide we are putting into the air. This darker music was also used to talk about incredible natural disasters. While the movie accurately depicted the issue we are facing around climate change, I believe the authors did a poor job of representing the people who are doing the organizing for climate justice and preventing climate change. The movie overall is an interesting film and I would recommend the film to peers because it is an accurate depiction of the problems faced when dealing with climate change and policy makers.
The documentary Disruption  is a great film that I believe people who are planning to do work around climate change should watch. The film shows some of the victories in the fight for climate change, but also the work we still have left to do. The interviews the director used were spectacular for conveying their purpose and was not overwhelming. The documentary receives a B+ for its content, use of b-roll, interviews, angles, and use of different types of music to show the seriousness of our current situation. If the documentary accurately depicted the people who are leading the work for climate change then the documentary would have received an A.

Food Workshop

The food workshop was very informative. It highlighted the important roles food played in history and how hard it is to get access to good health food. When we think about movements in history, like the bus boycott, we don’t think about things like food or money. However, this workshop brought this to light; it highlighted how during the bus boycott a group of women sold home cooked food to find things like transportation. This played an essential role during the bus boycott because it brought in money that helped to continue the boycott. This workshop also shed light on the food injustices growing on today. Many people don’t have access to good healthy food mostly because of money. It becomes a real problem when you can go to a fast food restaurant and get dollar burgers but organic food is expensive. This workshop help expose many of these things and made you really think about it.

Grow Dat Youth Farm - Reflections

This field trip was very eye opening. I haven’t been to a farm or been in a farm like setting so it was a new experience for me. It was very interesting to learn things about how certain crops grow in different climates. For example we talked about different summer crops such as watermelon, citrus fruit, etc. This was not only interesting to me but it made me think. Many main foods aren’t able to grow through the year. Therefore, they need these specific enviornmental condictions to thrive. One main reason for this trip was to contemplate how things are affected because of climate change; it was made clear that these crops will start to get scarce as climate change continue to effect the environment. For example winter crops will get scarce as global warming increase the temperature. This will eventually lead to many problem that can ultimately result in a decrease of population. I feel many more people who grew up in city areas should visit farms. This field trip could make many others realize just how much climate change is effecting us in the long run.

Grow Dat Farm Reflection

I really enjoyed this field trip. It showed me that people are actually trying to help grow produce for its community. Not only that but it’s encouraging young children to join them to learn about growing plants, cooking, and making medicine. It was really a joyous experience to know when certain crops grow, etc.I really hope that we can go to the farm again.

Grow Dat Farm Reflecton

I  enjoyed being at the Grow Dat farm. I took a lot of pictures and actually got my question answered. When I first entered the farm, my first question was how does a farm contribute positively to climate change. The answer to the question is that when you grow your own food, you no longer need factories  to make your food, which causes pollution in the air. The factories also doesn't mean that your food is 100% healthy. When you grow your own food, you can be sure that your food is clean and that it had no modifiers or anything in it. This trip was also wonderful, because I could see how to start off the whole growing your own food process and plus it gave me an insight on how hard it is to actually handle a farm.

Think 100% Ep 2

I am listening to Raheem Devaughn's Think 100% Ep 2: Uniting Our Power for Positive Change. This episode of the podcast generally takes about us as banding together so that we can make a better change and help climate change. It starts by talking about why they do this show in which he states that "why we do this show because climate change is real." He talks about the lack of housing and the rise in suicide. They talk about the water pollution in Flint, Misigon and how the people are trying to fight for clean water. There is a guest speaker, Kerry Browner, where she talks about how they set the first ever carbon pollution standard, Lisa Jackson, and fuel efficency standards, Raylah Hood. They talk about how the proggressive movements are pretty male heavy meaning there are more males leadin this movement then women. They talk about why it is very important for women to have a wider voice in the movement. They say vote for people who say climate change is real. This means vote for someone who acknowledge climate change and not ignore it. This podcast wants us to get together and bring climate change to an end.

I really enjoyed listening to this podcast. It taught me the things that are currently going on in the environmental justice community. It also acknowledge the problems in the community dealing with gender and leaders. I wasn’t aware of the standards being placed right now so it’s good to know that we are starting to do something about this climate change. I still don’t understand why politicians and other higher people aren’t acknowledging it when it will surely affect them in the very near future.

Episode 1

The podcast “Think 100%: The coolest show on climate change Episode 1: inaugural episode environmental justice 101” was made March 13, 2018. There are two host and a guest speaker Donald a congressmen of Virginia. The podcast was more like an interview in order to get personal opinions on how Donald felt about climate change. He feels as if climate change is threatening to the world and that it is mostly drastic for colored people. He believes that we should transform into a green economy for it will solve our climate change problem and create more jobs decreasing unemployment rates. Donald feel as if everyone deserves clean air, clean water, and a healthy environment. The acts of mining companies and big industries are driven by the greed of money which causes health risks like asthma.

The podcast in my opinion was actually good because it wasn’t a reading. I was able to listen to it and actually be interested. It was very straight forward and honest. It didn’t beat around the bush they were fully aware that the audience is world wide so there for they were obligated to tell the truth so that their views wouldn’t be contradicted. Overall the podcast was great and very engaging.

“Uniting Our Power for Positive Change”

This episode on the “Think 100%” podcast is all about uniting individuals to fight against climate change. Some examples Raheem Devaughn give in uniting are uniting as a nation. For example, Cuba’s electrical system still being down 6 months after it was hit by hurricanes. With this being apart of the U.S he shows that we as a nation should be uniting trying to fix problem in lesser recognized U.S countries. This is also clear in Flint, Michigan where they are still fighting effects from lead poisoning from their water system. He then introduce the guess speaker, former EPA administrator and current chair holder in the LCV, Carol Browner. She goes on to talk about uniting through family, gender, and politics. First through family, she mentions how the best way to get mothers, or parents, involved with the movement is through their kids. Knowing their kid is in danger will most always push a parent to move and take action. However it isn’t just the parents job; we as sons/daughters must be informed on the situation in order to spread this news. This also ties into gender; Raheem Devaugn mentioned that their are obviously a lack of women involved and recognized in the movement. Browner agreeing with this then gives the soulition of getting kids to invoke their mothers. This will not only help get families as a whole united, but it will also help women get more recognized and united with men in the movement. Browner also mentions the need to unite during voting. This however was different from the other forms of uniting. She doesn’t mean we need to all vote for the same person, however, we shouldn’t just vote for anyone; we need to vote for the candidates that appreciate, understand, and thoroughly tries to help further the movement. This will ensure that whoever is in office next will be on the right side of climate change.

This podcast was, in my opinion, amazing. It brought a lot to light to me and informed me on a lot; moreover, it shared a lot of common views as me. One of the things it informed me of was the efforts trump and his administration went to to undue environmental movement laws passed during former presidencies. Also, a major thing I learned is how these organizations, such as EPA, are obligated by law to enforce policies that directly contribute to climate change. For example, if a law is passed that prohibits a certain amount of carbon admissions by a company, they are obligated to step in. However, it doesn’t stop their we have the right to sue these corporations if nothing is done. Some points that resignated with me was when Browner said that even the smaller things such as getting fuel efficient things helps out. I really agree with this point; many people feel their lives are too busy to try and help. However, this couldn’t be more from the truth; simple things such as carpooling, biking, buying eco friendly things, and even cutting off lights around your house can help significantly.

Grow That Youth Farm located in the City Park has been designed to beautifully counteract the effects of the big industrial city. This farm has mainly impacted the youth by helping us learn about sustainable living. Through the tour of the area, I learned about the effect of different type of farming on the environment. Farming has definitely helped our society but different types of farming like monocropping are actually damaging our soil.  Education like the education offered at Grow Dat Youth Farm has increased awareness about social issues related to farming.

Episode 1: Inaugural episode- Environmental Justice 101

In Episode 1: Inaugural episode-  Environmental Justice 101, before the show started, there was a song that was talking about climate change and how bad it was. Congressman Mc. Donald Mckeeshman representing Virginia. Sharing experiences and directions happening on capitol hill to help us on how to get engaged in it. What is environmental justice? This is a question that was asked. The answer was very straightforward. Everything dealing with the environment. We need to be in the right relationship with the environments. It can mean good paying jobs. Green economy ready to explode that can be explored when dealing with environmental justice. Spirit and Natural makes people not be climate change deniers. It makes someone care deeper and they want to make up for lost time. Communities on the front line as of framing out the future are playing a role by coming up with their own solutions. Everyone deserves to live a healthy environment. Communities should be more involved in the movement. People don’t believe that black people can be environmentalist. Black folks are most affected by environmental causes. Communities are next to landfills that are causing bad water and bad air. Asphalt jungles. Have to get greenhouse emissions under control. The environment hits so many different levels and it affects the way we live and the work. Jobs are threatened by the sea levels rising. There are a little places you can drill that wouldn't invade with the navy. Still in final accords- keep global temperatures down. No more than 4 degrees celsius and Trump does not care about global warming and he is asking the US to break their promise. We can win on climate environmental change if black people is at the table on the decision making.

I liked this podcast a lot, because It was like a interview that played ou the downsides of environmental justice and the upside of it. It gave everyone in the community a role that they played in the way that our environment is. I would recommend this podcast to people, because I think a lot of people in thne community needs to hear this, especially people of color. We are always seen as we can't be environmentalist. It's seen as a white person's job and that is why we barely see any black people in the movements that happen when people do videos on them. I beleive that people have the ability to be anything they want and the people that get most affected by these problems, should have a voice in the matter because we are the ones catching all of the hell.

Think 100% ep:39 Notes

In episode 39 they discuss with the Chesapeake Climate Action Network about their blueprint for success. They talked with Executive Director Mike Tidwell, Maryland Director Brooke Harper ,and Virginia Director Harrison Wallace. They break down what was going on in DC, maryland and virginia. They discuss what it took to get D.C. to pass what they refer to as the "boldest peace of climate legislation in the country". Which included getting the city gov't to pass a law agreeing to get the district of columbia in D.C. on 100% wide and solar electricity by the year 2032. In maryland 50% renewable energy by 2030 with a goal of 100% by 2040.In virginia their working towards the same thing looking to see some change in 2020. Also adding with the legislation the strongest building efficiency standards and huge incentives for electric cars and charging stations. Not only did they talked about the largest women's march and the confrontation following the indigenous peoples mark at the lincoln memorial. The confrontation with Nathan Phillips was more of a racial attack ,and he showed bravery by putting himself in the middle of the action. Mike Tidwell says that the Chesapeake climate action network formed in 2002 because as a journalist covering climate change, and he got invested after realizing that gap between what we know about climate change and what we're doing about it is huge. He felt live we needed to do something about it because it's morally unacceptable. The group is trying to make sure government officials are held accountable. The legislation has a strong equity component and it democraties solar power. The legislation is just trying to make things a even field when it comes to living healthy and trying to move forward. In maryland it also bring in more jobs, with the maryland clean energy jobs act, opening up more than 20,000 jobs rebuilding the bottom of the city.

To me personally i feel like the network is a refreshing movement. I think that it a step forward and actually making a change, while it still won't change much it's helping. Although solar and wind power had it downsides; including solar energy being very expensive so i believe it might take longer than what's expected. The effort sets as an example for other cities to make this puch and it might actually work in my eyes at least. The DVM's actions are exactly what i feel people were waiting on in terms of providing something beneficial and opening opportunities.

Film Analysis

Introduction Paragraph

The Disruption by Kerry Nyx and Jared B. Scott looks at the science behind the climate change.  It talks about how Humans are one of  the bigger causes of  climate change and how we as humans should do something about it before they have any  consequences. This film also looks at the political process of things and how even thought we know what’s going on how we aren’t doing anything about it. This documentary film was released in 2014 and reached the lengths of fifty-two minutes. The purpose of this film, whilst still looking at the devistating affects of climate change and how most humans are turning a blind eye, it is also showing the positives and how some people are acting to make a change in climate change.

Explanation
The film starts off with Apollo 9 on the moon, then as the music gets increasingly loud it goes into starting to talk about how if we don’t change what is being done now then we will affect our lives and our future generations. It then goes on to count down the days till the March starting with 100 in which between it mentions a  typhoon that hit the  Philippines. This typhoon made the  Philippines cry out so that someone would listen to the fact that we need to do something about the Climate change. The March that was planned was planned to inform the uninformed about the problems of climate change and how it is not affecting everyone the same way. I’ve noticed that the director went back in time and  showed an older clip of a nuclear disarmament movement. There is a lot of movement with the camera when it is showing the general people, but it is still during interviews and when there is a single person talking. The setting constantly moves around, but it is mainly stationed in the U.S. the Central conflict presented in this film is obviously the climate change, but also the lack of political views on this matter and how we need  politicians to  acknowledge  and take action to what’s going on with our earth.

Analysis and Evaluation
I really enjoyed watching this film. This film put my mind in a whole new mindset in understanding the real risk of climate change. The author achieved his purpose by using emotion and facts, for example when the man from the  Philippines spoke about how much it hurt him to see his country like that he even cried and showed very powerful strong emotions. While also the got professional speakers like such as a speaker from Harvard, New York Times, etc to go down the timeline to tell us about the rise in CO2, and the discovery of our atmosphere, etc. I believe that the  acting, writing, and music  in this film was powerful especially how the music constantly got louder and either slower and faster it seem to really set the mood for the current even happening in the film.  I would recommend this film to others because they can get to know what is going on in their society and how their actions in everyday life is constantly affecting them and everyone around them, and also i think it will be helpful for them to know the actions they can take to make this earth a better place for us and the future.

Conclusion
The impression this film left on me was that while us as the people are constantly trying to do what is right for our country, the people of power are mostly ignoring what is happening. I believe that this is mainly because like i explained early on how it is not affecting everyone equally. While it is mostly hurting people of color, low income communities, etc, people of power aren’t getting the same affect, therefore they ignore it until they are impacted personally. I really want you guys to understand the disastrous affects of climate change and how it is affecting you personally.  Whether or not You see it, it affecting our  atmosphere and lives all the same. Climate change is slowly killing us and we need to change. That is what that March represented, a need for change on earth. And with that, I’d give this film an A because it was really clear and and appealed to more people, sure as people who’ve lost their homes, and people of color, etc, it also really got in depth with the timeline and scientific facts and research on climate change and its affects on the earth.

Film Analysis

Often times in life we are the bystanders to a problem that is way bigger than we are but we as the people who it affects the most tend to do everything in our power to stop and  prevent the problem from occurring or get worst. The film Disruption made in 2014 by the partficipants in the Peoples Climate March. The film was made to show the process in which it took days before the March even occurred. During the film it gave a variety of different facts in which to prove that climate change is a problem that has been here and progressing over time. The hour long film  produced and directed by Kelly Nyks and Jared P. Scott deliberately explains the impact climate change and high CO2 emissions have on our planet.
In the film it showed how different groups came together to make the whole thing possible. In the beginning they proved their point of the March and gave specific facts on how we are destroying our earth and if we continue to keep up with our way of life the earth will reach its tipping points which then it won’t turn back to its natural form. In Disruption it gives us the over view of feed back loops and facts on how climate change isn’t something that just started. Climate change has been a problem since before 1959 when Charles discovered the keeling curve showing how CO2 levels where continuously increase over time. The film is made in a specific order that I think is very important for the viewer they show the facts then have sit downs with the main people who are organizing it so that we can get personal views and opinions on what’s going on. The March is mostly to get the politicians to recognize the problem so that they can address it. The problem affects everyone but the after math affects the minorities the most because we aren’t provided with the right resources to rebuild nor prevent the distruction. The film does a great job at showing the impact that it has on normal people and how it really doesn’t affect the people in power that contribute to the problem the most.
In my opinion I believe the film was very interesting, impactful and informative. It help me realize that climate change is occurring faster than I think it is and if we don’t do something about it the earth will be at risk. The way the film was put together was very cut and clear which was good because it was straight to the point. I believe that the strengths of the film was the information part. It had very good facts and visuals behind it so that the viewer understands what’s actually going on. I believe their weakness was that they didn’t involve the rest of the groups opinions it was just mostly the leaders speaking. This film left me thinking and gave me the motivation to contribute to making a change and I also would like to show the film to others to spread the word even further.
In conclusion I would give them an A because it was interesting and I was able to understand it. It also wasn’t drained nor repetitive. Over all the film really serves its purpose and may impact the whole world.
Week 7

The short Film named  Disruption by Jared P. Scott is about how serious this subject of climate change is , and how not everybody sees the impact. It shows several non-government organizations bring people together to spread the word about climate change and share their knowledge and bring everybody on board the climate justice wave. The film also shows some of the many Climate Justice Leaders sharing their feelings on people not understanding the importance of climate justice and not knowing how to share their knowledge on climate change.

I like this weeks text and agree with it completely. Climate change is ignored when it definitely should not be. Its ignored because some people are not even aware of it, also some people think it is a new issue and are going to just wait it out. Others don't care because pollution is making them rich. But me and my generation have to deal with climate change, the world is liable to end before I die due to climate change and it is my elders fault.

Film Analysis

Disruption
The film Disruption, produced by Kelly Nyks and directed by Jared P. Scott analyzes the devastating results of climate change and the consequences if people do not fight to change the unsustainable behaviors of industrial capitalism. The fifty-two-minute long documentary gives a glimpse into the work that the People’s Climate Movement put in to organize the largest climate rally in history. The rally taking place during the UN's 2014 world climate summit and having more than a thousand people in attendance. Its purpose is to shine light on the efforts of the People's Climate movement and their fight to gain environmental justice for Communities of color and demand governmental policies for climate change. The film was released on September 7, 2014.
The film opens with a quote from Fredrick Douglas on a black screen and then footage from the Apollo 8 mission, showing a view of the Earth from the moon's horizon. The astronaut makes a remark about how the Earth is a " grand oasis in the big vastness of space." The image of the Earth slowly rising on the horizon is hauntingly beautiful, but then there is a reminder that the earth is no longer what it used to be. The documentary uses various clips of natural disasters, their aftermath, clips of news reports about the changing weather, and world political leaders discussing the importance of taking action against climate change. The dramatic, intense music and the sound of a clock ticking, brings an atmosphere of suspense, tension, and evokes emotion. The clips of natural disasters, images of protests around the globe, and the count down until the People's Climate March build suspense and anticipation. These clips put emphasis on the urgency in the fight against climate change. The film includes appearances of political leaders, People's Climate leaders, members, and news reporters. The documentary did a successful job at evoking urgency and emotion regarding climate justice. The execution of the film was beautiful in a sad and distressing way. There was a representation of people of color who are affected at disproportionate rates by climate change and showed them taking action. I found the film to be informative, cultivating, and easily comprehensible. Watching the documentary makes you want to be a part of the movement and brings upon the realization that the issue of climate change can not wait. Disruption emphasizes that climate injustice is closer to home than most people think. The film also acknowledges that people might not have climate change at the forefront of their agenda because of responsibilities that are more pressing. It then challenges that idea by acknowledging the psychological rational versus emotional aspect and stating that people often respond present urgent matters before ones that are developing and are just as important, if not more. The movie motivated me to want to become more active in the fight against climate injustice within my community and on a larger scale. I would give this film an A plus because of the impact it left on me, it caught my attention completely and made me reflect on my own experiences with climate injustice. The content was easy to follow, thought evoking, and gave the viewer to feel a sense of inspiration for the future. The appearance of so many people of different ethnicities, ages, and backgrounds showing support for the same cause makes you feel that there is something you can do too. This film is definitely something that everyone should get the chance to see, especily people in communities of color who are directly affected by climate change.

Film review

The name of the film that I am reviewing is Disruption. This is a documentary that was published in 2014 directed and produced by Kelly Nyks and Jared P. Scott. The documentary is about an hour long story illustrating the change brought to the environment by industries. It shows the effect that people in higher economic standings have on people from lower standings. Current generations are shown uniting trying to change the effects of these powers on the world. I really liked this documentary because it gives the disbelievers to change something to hope for.
The opening of this documentary is one hundred days before the march for change and throughout shows different groups meeting about the march and ways to reach more people. This documentary also includes input from scientist and political figures involved in changing climate change. As the documentary progresses the days to the march decrease continuously the sound in the documentary intensifies and gets louder. Similarly, the angels go from an overall viewpoint to close contact images and videos of protests and other marches. I like the change from community member to scientist and politician that the document shows.
The director achieves her purpose through factual evidence and statements from professionals and personal experience from community members. I believe that the music in this documentary is very effective because as the story progresses and the closer to making history with the march the more the music changes to signify that a huge change is about to happen. This documentary is strong in the transitions from people, events, and time, however, it could improve in length. My overall response to the film is that while it's long, it still is really persuasive and informative. I would recommend this film to others because it helps in understanding the impact of climate change and why we should try to change how we live.

The impression that this film left with me is that it is imperative that we hold the people who actually are responsible for climate change accountable for what they have done. I would want people to know that they may need some background knowledge about climate change before watching this film. I would grade this film as a B. The film gets a Because while it helps in understanding climate change people who may have never heard of climate change may not understand this film. I found the film interesting but it is so long that younger viewers might start to zone out.

FGR-Climate Justice

The film Disruption by Jared P. Scott provides an explanation on the causes of climate change. While also addressing the attempts to reduce human impact through our government leaders. The film was published September 7,2014; the film is also 52 minutes long. The film can be labeled as a documentary. This movie focuses on the power of the people as an important life changing tool. The movie brings in a wide range of opinions;backed by credible sources which strengthens their arguments. The movie goes behind the scenes of what looks like to be a template for future protests at United Nations climate summits.

The whole plot of the documentary is that we’re the first generation to feel the harshe consequences of climate change. While also taking presheer because their the last generation that can do something about it.The main question being asked is “ Why do we do so little when  we know so much?. The film tries to find the answer, through terrifying science, the relentless industry special interests, and the broken political process. The film opens with major historic moments. The film focuses mostly on history facts and giving a image to them. It's basically documenting climate change and the history behind it.

The Filmmaker's point is valid and his purpose of documenting the history. On the other had it focuses mainly on the history not the directv affect. The uses of the early music in the background and the experts help give off the fact that it's important. The way in which everything was filmed was very effective from me because it covers what's now not really being discussed but censored now.The strength of the film is the imagery and the structure but if the film wasn't so political focused i would of connected more with it.My overall feelings towards the film is that it's great for awareness and showing people the history and the strength of community.I really did find the film interesting because a lot of the information i didn't know like the March or gathering( the anti-nuclear demonstration) for climate change i didn’t know a lot of people were so invested for the cause. For me i would recommend it because it gives a more detailed description of chilate change then given in schools.

In conclusion, the film is basically saying the dangers from climate change are becoming more evident and it will be only a matter of time before we reach a tipping point. The warnings are intensifying and something needs to be done by our government leaders to stop this disruption and restore the balance of the world's climate. I would give the film an C . The reason being is that the film is educational and helps give historic context to climate change and the efforts put in to stop it but not everyone can relate to it and not everyone cares enough to look back at the history behind these climate change organizations and efforts.

Film Analysis

‘Disruption’  by Jared P. Scott
There will be many times in our lives where being bystanders to a problem is just as bad as being involved in the problem. In the 52-minute-long documentary film Disruption by People’s Climate Movement, directed and produced by Jared P. Scott and Kelly Nyks on September 7, 2014, takes us behind the scenes of climate change. It focuses on the hard work people are putting in to organize a rally in the United Nations in 2014 to stop and fight against climate change. The film found answers to the questions that have failed to be answered about the concerns of how climate change can affect our lives. It brings politics into different viewpoints as well to get the inside scoop on how they are contributing to the cause. The purpose of the film is to inform the newer generation on the consequences that climate change can produce and how the generation now has the power to do something about it because we know what is going on. We are conscious of the situation that we face with climate change. It also persuades us to get up and fix the madness that climate justice is putting on our society because us not contributing only adds to the problem.
Disruption is opened by people who lives have been impacted by telling their experiences. The people are very emotional and are also from low-income families. Disruption is about new and older generations. It’s focused around the rallies and protest that happen due to climate justice believers trying to put an end to the problem. The rallies and protest are very peaceful, so there is no violence and no need for any harsh retaliation from federal officials. When the film goes into talking about a personal experience, the film is played in black and white. The black and white filming shows me that the flashbacks that they are showing happened before the 20th century, where color was not yet on films. The music in the background is very mellow and smooth, showing how serious the situation at hand actually is. When the flashbacks of situations that happened in the past are being shown, the music begins to become more upbeat, but not too much. This shows that something important is about to be shown. The sound of a scratchy radio sounds as well when they show the damage to the houses that climate change has produced.
Jared P. Scott, the director of Disruption, achieved his purpose, because the details that he used in the film about how when we just sit around and not do anything, climate justice hits us the worse, and we come apart from the problem. The music is effective because you can sense when the film is about to go into something important, chaotic, or just smooth and normal. The sound that happens in the background, whether the sound was high or low, slow or fast, you could tell what was about to happen at that particular point. Some strengths of the film are that the film has interviews with people who are working on the project. The film also adds political views to the solution, by stating how the Republicans are contributing by making acts and other important policies that can help the people especially in the poor parts of the country. An example of this is how the Republicans made a Superfund project. The Superfund project is a project that funds the cleanup of toxic waste. This is essential to the poor because they suffer the most out of all minority groups with funding to clean up the living space around them. With this program, it made it possible for them to live a cleaner life. A weakness of the film that I personally saw is that it doesn’t really go further into how certain groups can contribute. I think that would have made Jared’s argument better in trying to persuade the audience to contribute because there is so little that we can do that hasn’t already been accounted for. My overall response to the film is that I really enjoyed it. I found it very interesting, because a lot of the things that they said about climate justice as far as destruction, I didn’t know. I would most definitely recommend it to others because I really feel as though it would get a lot more people involved in helping out the community.
Disruption is a great film to persuade different generation varieties to become more involved in our daily problems in society. It will prevent us from being bystanders and adding to the problem, instead of fixing it. It emphasizes the role of being a leader because in order to contribute you need to have the skill of leadership. I grade this film an A- because it was an excellent film. I really enjoyed it and I’m pretty sure that others will love it just as much. The film focused on different parts of climate justice and how each part contributes to hurting our environment.
The film ended by repeating the phrase, ‘are you ready to march?’ And with a phone number and website to contact to join the movement. This is a tactic for persuasion and by providing contact information to join a specific movement, it can gain more support.
